Extracted from the original game manual
This is a sci-fi space shooter where players take on the role of a pilot defending humanity against a renewed alien invasion. You'll patrol wreckage, outflank enemies in asteroid belts, and fight against the Galaga, who are revealed to be advanced, time-displaced nanites of Earth origin.
Story
INTRODUCTION
1981: The First Wave
In 1981, mysterious insect-like aliens known as the "Galaga" arrived from the depths of space and launched an all-out attack on Earth. Their objective was total annihilation of our planet.
After a ferocious three-month battle, the inhabitants of Earth forced the aliens into retreat and saved the planet from an alien armageddon.
2185: Something Is Coming
By 2185, technology had advanced rapidly, and mankind had colonized most habitable places in our solar system, thanks to nano-technology. These insect-sized robots, capable of building other versions of themselves, made it possible to terra-form planets in mere decades, much faster than traditional Atmosphere Processors.
However, this expansion came at a cost. Global defense spending was reduced to only 30% of pre-expansionist levels. Designers of nano-technology began to plan remote terra-forming and resource retrieval.
Deep Space Explorer 1 (DSE1), the first of many planned terra-forming expeditions, was launched. DSE1's target was Pluto, with its massive supply of frozen nitrogen and methane. Propelled by an advanced ion drive, DSE1 had just begun terra-forming Pluto when another mission was launched with far more ambitious targets.
DSE2, a second-generation automated vessel, was bound for M1123, the star cluster closest to our Solar system. It was equipped with a fusion drive capable of near light speeds, AI-based computer assist and control software, and the latest self-replicating nano-technology nanites. The journey would take decades.
Shortly after DSE2's launch, the colonists on Pluto discovered the quantum flux signatures of thousands of objects moving in sub-space. It was estimated that their path would intersect with our solar system in approximately 5.5 years. An analysis revealed their origin to be near M1123. Could it be the Galaga again?
2191: The Swarm is Reborn
Since then, the Terran forces have been mobilized and all commercial pilots have been drafted for training. Galaga alien remains have been re-examined with the latest technology to search for weaknesses and clues as to their origin.
First contact took place on January 13th, 2192, near Pluto. Within four hours, the core Earth fleet had been destroyed, and the survivors retreated to the colonies for re-supply and re-grouping.
As a trainee pilot, your ship was assigned patrol before the first attack, and you listened to the destruction of the fleet on the radio. As far as you know, several other wings of fighters made it out and are now en route for the five human colonies. Your initial instructions are to patrol the wreckage for escape pods before trying to outflank the aliens in Saturn's asteroid belts.
2193: Postscript
Detailed examination of the Galaga wreckage has revealed that the Galaga are of Earth origin. The genetic algorithms used to control the nano-technology originally launched with DSE2 were based on fruit fly research, and the same algorithms were found among the Galaga remains.
The Galaga are, apparently, advanced autonomous versions of the nanites originally shipped on DSE2. The only possible explanation is that a strange temporal displacement took place somewhere between Sol and M1123, altering the nanites and sending them back in time to their home planet - Earth.
DSE3, with a crew of 250 families bound for Alpha Centauri (the nearest star with known orbiting planets), was launched shortly after the end of the conflict. It has now been diverted toward M1123.

GAMEPLAY
FIRST TIME PLAYING
Once you've loaded GALAGA Destination Earth, you will find yourself at the title screen. Press the button and you will come to the Main Menu.
Select "New Game." A mission briefing screen will appear and give you information about playing the level. Press the button to advance to an introduction movie. You will then find yourself in the first stage, 'Shipwreck.'
THE MISSION
When you first begin the game, only the first mission, "Shipwreck," is available to you. Once you complete the first mission, you'll have to chase the Galaga aliens from deep space to Saturn and on to Earth's upper atmosphere.
Each mission will begin with a Mission Briefing, which will explain the mission objective(s). In the course of completing a mission, you'll have to defeat successive waves of Galaga attackers, each more difficult than the last.
During some missions, a Challenge Mode will occasionally allow you to sit back and blast streams of alien ships for bonus points. If you need a break, simply hit the start button to Pause the game. From the Pause Menu you can review the briefing.
REMEMBER!
You cannot save a game in GALAGA Destination Earth. During a game you will have only three chances to continue playing after all your ships within a mission have been destroyed. Once you have used all your chances, you will return to the Main Menu where you will start a new game from the first level.
COMPLETING A MISSION
When you finish a mission, a Statistics Screen will display information about your performance on the mission and upgrades you have received. Press the button to advance to the next mission.
THE PLAYER'S SHIP
Initially, your ship has a single weapon, with a limited rate of fire, and limited maneuverability. You will also start each mission with just one Smartbomb that will destroy all the alien ships on screen.
As the game progresses, several upgrades are permanently added to your ship, ranging from increased shield capacity to special maneuvers. These ship upgrades are added based on your ship merit points, described below.
