Assassin's Creed: Rogue is the eighth main game in the historical series, serving as a sequel to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and a prequel to Assassin's Creed III , with its final mission also being a prologue to Assassin's Creed: Unity .
The protagonist, Shay Patrick Cormac, is an Assassin recruit with a rebellious streak who eventually becomes disillusioned with the order's tactics and joins the Templars. The game features many returning characters from previous games, including Adéwalé. Players also return to the modern day sequences, exploring Cormac's memories during a server crash as a new employee at Abstergo Entertainment.
The game is set in 18th century America during the French and Indian War, with main locations including New York, the River Valley, and the North Atlantic Ocean. The ice environments introduce new mechanics such as frozen cargo, icebergs, and an ice-breaker ram. Swimming in icy water damages Cormac's health, and there are no underwater missions like in Black Flag .
On land, typical missions return with some alterations to the fighting mechanics, allowing for countering based on timing rather than keeping a button pressed. New weapons include air rifles, grenade launchers, and oil barrels that can be ignited. Sea shanties return, featuring a mix of old and new songs. Players also encounter new animals to hunt, such as narwhals and polar bears.
The gameplay experience is enriched by the addition of passive income through building restoration, gang control, and side quests. As with previous games, there are many collectibles to discover. However, Assassin's Creed: Rogue does not feature a multiplayer mode.
