Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai is a departure from typical Cabela's gaming fare in that its focus is not on hunting. Rather, Survival is designed more as an action-adventure game with Cabela's-themed hunting elements.

The story revolves around Logan James, a private pilot flying to deliver important cargo to an essential destination where people's lives are at stake. His plane crash lands near Katmai Mountain, forcing him to venture into an adventure to survive and escape the mountain alive with his cargo intact. Wild animals such as bears, wolves, cougars, and birds threaten survival, requiring the pilot to use his hunting and survival skills.

The game is designed for the PlayStation 3 console and features action-adventure gameplay with a focus on exploration, combat, and survival. The player must manually aim using the Top Shot Elite gun peripheral or a controller to hunt and defend against wildlife. The game also includes arcade-style shooting galleries for one or two players.

The action-adventure aspects of the game include God of War-style cliff-climbing sequences, searching for collectible objects, dog sledding, and intense battles against North American predators.

Players can enjoy various challenges and special power-up items during the shooting galleries, which are best experienced with the Top Shot Elite gun. The game offers a unique blend of survival and action-adventure gameplay, making it an exciting experience for fans of the genre.
