Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai is an action-adventure game that takes a departure from typical Cabela's gaming fare. The focus is on survival rather than hunting, with elements of action-adventure thrown in.
The story follows Logan James, a private pilot flying a doctor through Alaska to deliver important cargo. His plane crashes near Katmai Mountain and he must navigate the wilderness to survive and escape with his cargo intact. He will have to use his hunting and survival skills to overcome threats from wild animals such as bears, wolves, cougars, and birds.
The game is designed to work with the Top Shot Elite gun peripheral, using a targeting cursor that the player must control manually. With a controller, it simulates a Third-Person Shooter experience. The player can also perform "Focus Shots" to slow down time and place their aim on internal organs of hunted animals.
The game features action-adventure elements such as cliff-climbing sequences, searching for collectible objects like map pieces, dog sledding, and intense battles against North American predators.
There are also arcade-style shooting galleries, including Survival (surviving as long as possible), Trek (a simple shooting mode with animals that appear), and Quick Draw (focusing on predator avoidance). These events can be enjoyed with the Top Shot Elite gun, featuring challenges and special power-up items.
