The third main game in the puzzle-platformer series, LittleBigPlanet 3 , has an overarching story for the first time, with voiced supporting characters and cut-scene sequences. The game is set in Bunkum where Sackboy meets Newton, who tricks him into unleashing three Titans, creatures that were locked up because they robbed the world of creativity.
The goal is to explore three hub worlds where three heroes can be rescued: Oddsock, Swoop and Toggle. These characters have different abilities and can be used in some of the levels with puzzles specifically for that character. The player must work together with the other characters in the final levels of the game. Each character has unique abilities, such as Oddsock's walljumping, Swoop's object-grabbing, and Toggle's form-switching.
In addition to the characters' abilities, Sackboy can use a variety of gadgets, including a helmet for gliding, a Blink Ball gun for teleportation, Boost Boots for longer jumps, and a vacuum gun for pulling objects. The game also features rope-based textures that allow Sackboy to climb.
The game can be played cooperatively with up to four players, each controlling a customized character. Level environments are diverse, ranging from a 50s diner to a space level, a movie set, and an Eastern European-Christmas-themed Ziggurat Hub. The player can complete levels by building contraptions using collected items. As in the previous games, it is possible to design and share custom levels. The game introduces a series of twelve Popit Puzzles in the Popit Academy, each teaching a specific technique or tool for level building. Players can build custom power-ups, starting with the Blaster Handle tool, which can be enhanced. The three layers of LittleBigPlanet 2 have been expanded to support up to sixteen layers.
LittleBigPlanet 3 is available on the Playstation 4 and includes millions of levels created in the previous game, as well as full compatibility for both platforms for content such as costumes bought earlier.
