Rock Band 4 is the fourth game in the Rock Band series, released five years after Rock Band 3 . It continues the concept of simulating music with instruments and singing vocals. Unlike Guitar Hero Live , it has backwards compatibility for previous games' instruments and content on the same console family.
The gameplay is identical to earlier games, with players using instruments and microphone to play and sing through songs by following cues on the screen. The score is based on accuracy, with certain sections marked with coloured notes. When these are completed successfully, an Overdrive meter is filled, which can be activated to double the score multiplier for a short while.
The game features freestyle solos, where players have freedom to improvise, but must follow general rules to score. There are also drum fills instead of freestyle sections, and vocals with harmonies for up to three parts. The main career mode introduces a starting band that needs to progress through gigs with varying risks and rewards.
In the game, players can customize their band's instruments and clothes using money earned from performances. They can also design custom avatars for the band members and choose how to travel around. The game features quick play, shows (a series of songs broken up in sets), and a new mode where players can vote on songs.
