In the Game Boy Advance version of Bionicle Heroes , players take on the role of the TOA Anika team as they attempt to retrieve the Mask of Life from the Piraka race. The story is set on the island of Voya Nui, where the Matoran inhabitants have been enslaved by the Piraka. With a top-down perspective, the game takes place across six zones, culminating in a final showdown. The player starts as a TOA of Fire, but can collect additional masks – Air, Stone, Ice, Earth, and Water – by completing zones and defeating level bosses.
The gameplay involves exploring the island, fighting enemies, and collecting power-ups and upgrades. Each TOA has primary and secondary weapons based on the mask's elemental nature, which provide specific features. Players can also collect proto-spawn orbs that circle around the hero and fire at enemies, with options to customize their abilities. Elemental runes are available, providing one-time limited effects such as freezing enemies or activating a lightning shield.
The game requires players to use resources found in the environment, such as blue, gray, or gold LEGO pieces, to build bridges, platforms, elevators, and other structures that aid in progress. At the end of each zone, players can view their rank and score, with 12 medals to collect – some of which are only available through Free Play mode. Hidden cheat words can be discovered, granting access to bonus items such as playing as a golden TOA or obtaining exclusive masks.
