Virtua Fighter 2 shares the name with the second title in Sega's seminal 3D fighter series, this 16-bit version brings the game to the world of 2D fighters. Sharing the same spirit as its bigger brother, the Virtua Fighter 2 features many elements that were present in the original.
The polygonal environment of the arcade/saturn version was replaced with regular sprites and a side-scrolling camera due to technological constraints and manufacturing costs. However, the arenas, characters, and sound effects are inspired by the 32-bit titles, featuring a small parallax scrolling trick to provide a slight 3D illusion. The gameplay is also similar to the original, with many button combinations remaining unchanged.
