Pipe Dream is an action-adventure puzzle game where the player's goal is to set up a network of pipes to allow a substance called 'flooz' to flow through as many squares as possible. The pieces are randomly arranged, and there are seven different types: straight lines, corners that rotate in four directions, and cross-over pieces that carry the flooz across horizontally and vertically.
The player has several seconds before the flooz starts flowing from its starting position to place the pieces. They can be placed anywhere on the grid, but a gap may remain to be filled, requiring the player to replace a piece with another to make it easier for the flooz to flow through that square. The player can also earn bonuses by looping the flooz through both sides of at least 5 cross-over pieces or passing the flooz through every square on the screen.
Later levels introduce new challenges, such as blocked squares and gaps in the side-wall, which allow the flooz to thread to the other side of the screen. After every four levels, there is a bonus game where the player can only place pieces in the lowest open space in each column, similar to the board game of "Connect 4".
Pipe Dream was released for the Super Famicom on 1992-08-07 and is an example of an action-adventure puzzle game. The gameplay involves strategy and planning as the player tries to set up a network of pipes to maximize the flow of the flooz.
