On the planet Zebes, a war between the Galactic Federation and the pirates is raging. The pirates have stolen an unknown life-form, known as Metroid , which was discovered on the planet SR388. This alien is in a state of suspended animation, but it's believed to be the cause of the destruction of SR388. If Metroid gets loose, it could destroy many other systems.

The space bounty hunter Samus Aran must land on Zebes and navigate through the treacherous terrain of Brinstar and Norfair. Her mission is to defeat the pirates, their alien enforcers Ridley and Kraid, and eliminate the Metroid life form before it's too late. With her advanced cybernetic enhancements in the Power Suit, Samus can use a variety of weapons and defenses to destroy enemies. She can also absorb enemy powers into her suit to increase her defense and chances of survival.

Samus must use her skills and special abilities to reach the central chamber of Tourian and destroy the Mother Brain, the mysterious leader behind the Space Pirates. With her determination and advanced technology, Samus Aran is the only one who can save Zebes from destruction.
