Madagascar is an action-adventure game where you play as Marty the Zebra, Alex the lion, Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippo, or the stealthy Penguins as they escape from the Central Park Zoo and make their way through the streets of New York into the wild jungle of San Diego. The storyline follows the movie itself, with each chapter bringing you closer to completing your goal. Every stage has its own unique objectives, and you can replay them to try to complete all of them.

As you progress through the game, you'll need to play as different characters, some of which will involve all five main characters. Each character has their own special abilities, such as Marty's kicking skills, Alex's throwing and roaring, Gloria's tumbling and butt-bouncing, Melman's spinning and Helicopter move, and the Penguin's sliding and Finishing moves.

Collecting items is also an important part of the game. You can gather Life Tikis to restore your health, as well as Monkey Money to spend at the Zoovenir Shop on mini-games and special outfits for the Madagascar cast. The Xbox version of Madagascar was released on May 24th, 2005, and is an action-packed adventure that's fun for fans of the movie.
