Diablo III is the third instalment in Blizzard's franchise. The plot is set twenty years after the events of Diablo II, when a star falls on the cathedral in Old Tristram (the same cathedral that the hero had to explore down to the depths of Hell in the original Diablo). The hero, one of five classes (Barbarian, Monk, Demon Hunter, Witch-doctor and Wizard), male or female, sets off to investigate the mysterious falling star.
The game is a dungeon crawler in which the player fights against hordes of enemies ranging from beasts and undead to actual demons. The environment is made up of various maps. The towns and cities have predefined maps, and the fields and dungeons have random maps. These maps are reset any time the player reloads the game. The game has four acts, two game modes (normal and hardcore) as well as four difficulty levels: Normal, Nightmare, hell and Inferno. In hardcore mode, defeat is not allowed.
Each character can choose from multiple sets of abilities to customize their gameplay experience. There are standard attacks, special attacks, special abilities, and passive abilities. The player can unlock new skills by leveling up and choose which ones to use. Some skills require runes that add a special effect.
The equipment system allows for extensive customization options. Each character has slots for different pieces of armor and weapons, as well as an amulet slot and two ring slots. Players can switch out equipment regularly due to the random magic attributes of items. They can also dye their armor pieces and craft new gear using the forge.
Players can choose from three different followers in solo mode, each with unique skills and equipment slots. Friends can join solo games at any time, but the follower will become unavailable when switching to co-op mode. Public games and PvP modes are also available, including a free-for-all deathmatch called "duels".
The game features an auction house where items can be bought and sold for in-game gold or real money. Players can earn achievements by meeting certain requirements, but due to the random nature of the game's maps and quests, it takes multiple play-throughs to complete them all.
