Red Faction: Armageddon , set 50 years after Red Faction: Guerrilla , takes place on Mars where the player, Darius Mason, must navigate through the tunnels to make things right. The story begins with Darius' mistake of unleashing an hostile alien race, which was not intended for the planet, and he now has to face the consequences. With the humans retracted underground, it's up to him to restore balance.
The gameplay experience is a significant departure from its predecessor, shifting to a linear third-person shooter with limited open-world exploration. Players will predominantly walk through levels, eliminating alien masses or human cultists using an array of conventional and science fiction weapons. Occasionally, boss battles and vehicle sequences like inside a mech can be encountered. Scattered throughout the levels are valuable pieces of scrap that can be traded for character or weapon upgrades.
One notable feature is the destructible terrain, which also serves as a means to dispose of enemies. The environment can be destroyed, but Darius has a device that allows him to repair it. Besides the main campaign, Armageddon features two additional playing modes: destruction mode and an enemy wave-fighting cooperative mode for up to four players.
