The player takes on the role of a small-time criminal in Grand Theft Auto , trying to make it big with the mob by committing various crimes and doing jobs for gangsters. The goal is to earn points by stealing cars, crashing into traffic, killing cops, and completing missions.
The game is divided into six levels spread across three cities: Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City, each based on a real US city. To finish a level, the player must reach a certain score. Completing missions can raise this score substantially and increase the score multiplier.
However, being a criminal has its drawbacks. If police witness a crime, the player's wanted level rises, and they must evade capture by driving to a respray shop and getting a new paint job with new license plates. The cost of this service is deducted from the player's score, but it allows them to avoid arrest.
The game features a top-down perspective, which provides a bird's-eye view of the cities as the player drives at high speeds. The cities are large and can be freely explored, with scattered crates containing various items such as weapons, armor, bonus lives, and more.
