ESPN Extreme Games , also known as Xtreme Games , is a sports game that lets players access three modes of play: Exhibition, New Season, or continuing a season. Exhibition mode helps the player get to know the courses and equipment while getting a feel for the controls. In New Season, the player competes against sixteen other competitors on any of the four racing machines, earning season points and money to upgrade equipment.
Players can choose between different types of vehicles: roller blades, a luge, a mountain bike, or a skateboard. Each character has a unique skill level for one of the apparatus, so it's essential to pick the right combination. In a season, players compete at five locations, three times each, with increasingly difficult obstacles and faster opponents.
The tracks are:
Italy - Country roads leading down to a town area;
Lake Tahoe - Twisting roads and strategically placed obstacles;
South America - Lots of caves and thin jungle roads;
San Francisco - Hundreds of obstacles and hills;
Utah - Falling rocks, secret routes, and some hungry-looking animals.
The game was originally released for the PlayStation console in 1998 and had an ESPN license. However, when the Greatest Hits release came out, the game's title was changed to Xtreme Games , and all ESPN logos and video footage were removed due to expired licensing.
A sequel, 2Xtreme , was released in 1997.
