Mr. Driller 's world is covered in mysterious blocks, threatening his survival. With a trusty drill as his only weapon, he must dig his way down to safety before running out of air.
The gameplay is a real-time puzzle that requires quick thinking and planning. It's a mix of Tetris and Boulder Dash, where you need to drill through multi-colored blocks to reach the bottom while avoiding the dangers of reckless drilling. If you don't find a solid foundation for a block, it will drop down after a while, potentially crushing Mr. Driller .
The player must also manage his air supply, grabbing oxygen pick-ups regularly to avoid running out. Certain blocks, like "X-Blocks", are particularly hazardous and take multiple attempts to drill through. If four or more X-Blocks come into contact with each other, they'll disappear, leaving behind a blue creature called "Chisokojin" that rewards 765 points when picked up.
Mr. Driller features two challenging scenarios: the 2500ft and 5000ft challenges, which are five and ten levels long respectively in the GameBoy Color version. In Japan, these are known as the "500m" and "1000m" challenges.
Mr. Driller was released on August 2nd, 2000 for the GameBoy Color.
