Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is the sequel to Hotline Miami , with very similar gameplay and also the final game in the series. The story is tied directly to the first game and is set between 1985 and 1991, but with an anachronistic order.
The story follows a larger playable cast than the original game, with each level offering a single character or a small selection to choose from. Each character offers a distinct perspective of the events, similar to the use of masks in the first game. Characters have specific abilities and perks, such as speed, dodging, dual weapons, and executions.
The gameplay is fast-paced, with a single attack often lethal, requiring levels to be replayed multiple times until all enemy patterns are figured out. Levels have specific objectives, and most require all enemies to be killed. Short scenes between missions further the story, while players must take note of line of sight through windows to avoid snipers.
Players can pick up and throw various weapons, and it's possible to slightly view ahead to anticipate enemy movements. The game includes two difficulty levels: 'Hard' is unlocked after completing the campaign on 'normal', with enemies becoming harder to defeat and certain abilities being removed. A level editor was made available after release, allowing players to create levels and cutscenes with dialog.
