No More Heroes is an action-packed adventure set in the fictional city of Santa Destroy, California. Travis Touchdown, the game's protagonist, wins a unique Beam Katana through an online auction and decides to become a professional killer, driven by his eclectic interests in J-Pop music, toy robots, wrestling, and videogames.
The gameplay is open-ended, allowing players to explore a free-roaming world similar to Grand Theft Auto. The main objective is to eliminate the ten top assassins to progress through the story, but side quests offer opportunities to earn money and acquire new weapons. Travis wields his katana using the Wii remote's motion controls, while the nunchuk handles movement.
The game features a variety of combat styles, including wrestling moves in close quarters. A targeting system helps players aim for their opponents, with different button combinations unlocking special attacks. Alongside his katana, Travis also has a range of other abilities to take down enemies.
Throughout the journey, Travis is aided by Doctor Naomi and Thunder Ryu, who provide support and guidance as he navigates the world on foot or motorcycle. The game's cel-shaded graphics add to its visual style, which balances over-the-top combat with tongue-in-cheek humor.
A high-definition remaster of No More Heroes was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2021, offering improved visuals and a fresh experience for new players.
