Saints Row IV continues the story of Saints Row: The Third , where the protagonist became President of the USA. However, aliens attacked the White House and kidnapped the Saints gang members, trapping them in their personal nightmare loops. With the help of Kinzie, the group's hacker, they manage to escape on a space ship with the goal of rescuing the rest of the gang. Saints Row IV is an over-the-top action and humour game that continues its predecessor's course. The protagonist receives superpowers within the simulation, such as super jump or telekinesis, which aid in movement and fighting aliens. While these powers make driving unnecessary, they can still be used to hijack cars.
The game features various side activities that can be activated in certain points of the game world, with ratings given for completion depending on performance. These mini-games have evolved from previous games, focusing more on superpowers and parodying other genres like side-scrolling brawlers or top-down shooters.
Throughout the main storyline, the protagonist visits the alien ship to rescue team members, who are physically trapped. The simulation can be exited to walk around the ship and talk to the team members, but primarily serves as a backdrop for parodying the Mass Effect series and its romances.
Saints Row IV rewards players with experience points and cache, which can be used to unlock personal upgrades or purchase weapons. New super powers are unlocked during the storyline, but also have upgrades that require another currency. The mobile phone is used for requesting unlocked cars and playing licensed music.
The game offers multiplayer options, including co-op during the campaign and two competitive activities.
