The series began in 2006 with the release of Saints Row, initially focusing on street gang warfare in the fictional city of Stilwater. Over subsequent sequels, the franchise shifted from a relatively serious tone to highly comedic, satirical, and over-the-top gameplay featuring superpowers and alien invasions. It is widely recognized for its open-world sandbox mechanics and extensive character customization options.
Developed by Volition and initially published by THQ, the franchise originated as an Xbox 360 exclusive with the 2006 release of
Saints Row. This debut title, which received various physical releases such as
Saints Row [Platinum Hits] and
Saints Row [Steelbook Edition], established the Third Street Saints as the central faction.
The franchise expanded to multi-platform releases with
Saints Row 2 in 2008, introducing the rival Ultor Corporation.
Saints Row: The Third in 2011 moved the setting to the city of Steelport, significantly increasing the commercial success of the brand. This was followed by
Saints Row IV in 2013 and the standalone expansion
Saints Row: Gat out of Hell in 2015, both published under Deep Silver after THQ's bankruptcy.
In 2022, a reboot simply titled
Saints Row attempted to restart the franchise with a new cast in the southwestern city of Santo Ileso. Following the mixed reception of the reboot, parent company Embracer Group closed Volition in 2023, leaving the intellectual property under the control of Plaion.
