Jagged Alliance 3 is a turn-based tactics game with RPG elements. The player leads group(s) of mercenaries to liberate the tropical country of Grand Chien after its president was kidnapped by the paramilitary organization known as the Legion, which has become the strongest force in the region.
The gameplay in Jagged Alliance 3 focuses on the core loop of hiring and managing mercenaries affiliated with the Association of International Mercenaries (A.I.M.). As mercenaries level up their skills during combat, special perks can be unlocked to help specialize them for particular tasks. The game also features a real-time satellite view, allowing the player to inspect points of interest, move mercenary groups, and assign higher-level tasks.
Outside of turn-based combat, the game is played in real-time, with the player receiving income from liberated diamond mines and selling individual stashes for money injections. Enemy garrisons can be completed to soften their defenses, and when their defenders are eliminated, they can be used to house the player's own militia.
In tactical view, the player moves mercenaries in real time, conversing with locals, resolving side-quests, and picking up valuable items. The game features a cover system and highly destructible environments, with weather and time of day affecting alertness, fatigue, and vision distance.
The game can be played cooperatively with other players online, and saved game files can be continued in both single-player and multiplayer modes at will.
