Dan Hibiki is a self-confident but weak martial artist who created the 'Saikyo-ryu' fighting style. First appearing as a secret character in Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams, he went on to appear in Street Fighter Alpha 2, Pocket Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. He was originally created by Capcom as a parody of characters from rival SNK fighting games.
Within the
Street Fighter Alpha franchise, the character's evolution spans several key releases. Following his debut in
Street Fighter Alpha Warriors' Dreams (1999), he became a fully playable roster selection in
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (1996), which expanded his comedic moveset and signature taunts. This iteration solidified his role as a deliberate "joke character" within fighting game design. His popularity led to appearances in spin-offs and crossovers, such as the super-deformed fighting game
Pocket Fighter (1998) and the crossover title
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter (1999). This fighting legacy was later preserved in the compilation
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (2000).
Beyond the fighting genre, the name is associated with distinct characters in other gaming franchises. In the role-playing game
Tecmo Secret of the Stars (1995), a different character named Dan serves as a primary playable hero and member of the Aqutallion warriors. Additionally, the name is represented in the high-speed driving franchise
Crazy Taxi (2001), featuring as one of the selectable cab drivers known for his aggressive driving style.
