Founded in 1995 as a subsidiary of SAS Institute, SouthPeak Interactive (later SouthPeak Games) published titles across various platforms including PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and PC. The company was known for licensed titles like The Dukes of Hazzard series as well as original games like Boombots. After becoming independent, it acquired Gamecock Media Group in 2008 before eventually ceasing operations around 2013.
Based in Cary, North Carolina, the publisher initially utilized proprietary video technology developed by its parent software firm to create interactive movie games. As the market shifted, the company transitioned toward mainstream console publishing. During this pivotal era, the company secured publishing and distribution rights for several prominent console titles.
In 2000, the company expanded its portfolio with the release of the racing game
Rally Challenge 2000 and the fighting game
Fighter Destiny 2. That same year, they targeted casual audiences with the licensed title
The Flintstones Bedrock Bowling.
Following its spin-off into an independent entity led by Terry Phillips and Melanie Mroz, the publisher restructured its business model to focus on mid-tier retail distribution. It went public in 2008 through a reverse merger. Despite securing major distribution partnerships and expanding its catalog with role-playing and shooter franchises, the company faced numerous financial difficulties and legal disputes with developers over unpaid royalties, which ultimately led to its decline.
