Spike Chunsoft is known for developing the Danganronpa, Zero Escape, and Mystery Dungeon series. In addition to developing original titles, the company frequently localizes and publishes major Western video games for the Japanese market, including titles from Valve, Bethesda Softworks, and CD Projekt Red.
Formed in April 2012 through the merger of Spike and Chunsoft under parent company Dwango, the publisher built upon a legacy established by its predecessor entities. Prior to the formal merger, Spike operated extensively as a publisher of both domestic Japanese titles and localized Western intellectual properties.
In the late 2000s, the company secured publishing rights for several major international releases in Japan. This localization portfolio included
Fable II [Game of the Year] and
Left 4 Dead [Game of the Year Edition] in 2009, followed by the action-adventure title
Darksiders and its subsequent
Darksiders [Classics] budget release in 2010. Spike also distributed sports simulations such as
Major League Baseball 2K9 and offered budget-priced re-releases of older Western hits, including
Saints Row [Classics].
Concurrently, the company maintained its focus on Japanese-developed properties. It published domestic titles like the high school brawler spin-off
Kenka Banchou Portable in 2009. Following the merger, Spike Chunsoft consolidated these publishing pipelines, establishing a North American subsidiary in 2017 to directly handle the global localization and distribution of its own developed properties.
