Yu Yu Hakusho is a licensed two-player fighting game for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, adapted from the popular anime and manga series of the same name. Released in Japan on December 23, 1994, the game allows players to relive key story arcs from the series, most notably the Dark Tournament, through fighting gameplay. The game features a character elimination system that stays true to the anime's narrative, with characters being defeated in dramatic fashion. Visually, the game is notable for its impressive still-frame graphics and full-motion video scenes ripped directly from the original show, making it one of the more visually appealing titles on the 3DO platform. However, the fighting engine is described as somewhat clunky, and performing special moves requires specific inputs that can be difficult to master. The character selection roster features ambitious renderings that look impressive in still frames but reveal their limitations in motion. The soundtrack, while tolerable, is considered forgettable. The game was developed through a joint effort between Hudson Soft and Tose, and published under the Tomy label. Its demo disc appeared simultaneously with the game's release, and it has been recognized in lists of the best Japanese games of the 1990s. The game predates later entries in the series on other consoles, including a Nintendo 64 release three years later.
