Alien forces have invaded the planet Avalice, home to various humanoid animals, with their leader Lord Brevon at the helm. He has killed the King of Shuigang, taken the prince captive, and is now seeking the powerful Kingdom Stone to secure control over the galaxy. A group of heroes, including Lilac the dragon, Carol the wildcat, and Milla the hound, must band together to defeat the invaders and protect the Kingdom Stone.

Freedom Planet is a fast-paced 2D platformer with influences from classic Sega Genesis games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Gunstar Heroes. Players can choose one of three heroines, each with unique abilities and exclusive stages to complete. Lilac's speed allows her to quickly traverse levels, while Carol's martial arts skills and motorcycle enable agile movement. Milla's psychic powers grant her the ability to create shields, throw items, and navigate through levels with ease.

The game features a range of modes, including an Adventure mode that focuses on storytelling, a Classic mode centered solely on gameplay, and a Time Attack mode for speedrunners. The game also supports speedrunning, with achievements available for beating specific times in each stage.
