When the Sultan of Persia is fighting in a foreign country, his Grand Vizier Jaffar plots a coup to take the throne. To achieve this, he kidnaps the Sultan's daughter and threatens to kill her unless she marries him. The man the Princess loves is imprisoned and must escape within an hour to stop Jaffar before the marriage takes place.
Prince of Persia is a 2D platformer that laid the groundwork for the cinematic platformer genre. It differs from other games in its focus on careful progression through complex levels, highlighting the protagonist's vulnerability and survival aspects. The rotoscoping technique used gives the characters' movements more realism.
The player must avoid deadly traps, solve simple jumping and environmental puzzles, and engage in sword fights with guards. Although the character has an unlimited number of lives, each death sends them back to the start of a level. Completing the game within the time limit is crucial. The hero begins with three units of health, which can be replenished or increased permanently.
The Game Boy Color and SNES versions have additional levels and new enemies. The Genesis version features an altered intro, graphics changes, and four extra levels.
