The storyline follows fictional pilot Max Chatsworth , one of Britain's Flying Aces. His fame began in battle, where he was on a reconnaissance mission and his squadron was decimated by enemy planes. He survived and shot down seven enemy fighters in that single engagement, followed by thirteen more the next month. As a result, Germany offered the Blue Max medal to anyone who could shoot him down, and Chatsworth earned this new nickname.
In Blue Max , you play as Blue Max, going on sorties – flying missions – to attack assigned targets such as bridges, buildings, enemy planes, tanks, anti-aircraft batteries, vehicles, and ships. You progress through new missions by taking out your targets. Before starting play, various settings can be adjusted, including control type (normal or pilot), skill level, and whether gravity will affect the plane.
You must drop bombs to take out ground targets, but this action also poses a key danger for you. In early aircraft, pilots engaged in semi-suicidal bombing runs by starting at high altitude, tilting the nose downward towards their target, and then pulling up before hitting the ground. Releasing the bomb during the dive and pull-up process requires coordination – if timed incorrectly or started too low, you'll crash. You only have one life in this game.
Completing a mission or having your plane destroyed earns a ranking, which ranges from Kamikaze Trainee to Squadron Leader.
This game has sparked controversy and was allegedly banned in Germany. During your missions, you end up bombing houses.
(The actual Blue Max /Blauer Max is a nickname for the Prussian medal 'Pour le Mérite', first given to pilots Max Immelmann and Oswald Boelcke.)
