SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Avenger is set in Bikini Bottom, where the city is taken over by hundreds of Little Dirty Bubbles after a failed attempt by Mermaidman and Barnacleboy's arch-nemesis. SpongeBob must take on the role of The Yellow Avenger , using various powers from Mermaidman's utility belt to rescue residents.
Gameplay involves navigating fixed perspective 3D outdoor areas to rescue citizens, as well as exploring familiar locations like SpongeBob's Pineapple and The Krusty Krab in full 3D. Players can examine, move, and take items within these environments, but must be on the lookout for more villains.
