This illustration may not match all PlayStation 2 console types. For owners of SCPH-70000 series PlayStation 2 systems, refer to the setup instructions supplied with your system. Set up your PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system according to the instructions in its instruction manual. Make sure the main power switch (located on the back of the console) is turned on. Press the RESET button. When the power indicator lights up, press the OPEN button and the disc tray will open. Place the Guitar Hero disc on the disc tray with the label side facing up. Press the OPEN button again and the disc tray will close. Attach game controllers and other peripherals, as appropriate. Follow on-screen instructions and refer to this manual for information on using the software.
Memory Card
To save game settings and progress, insert a MEMORY CARD (8MB) (for PlayStation 2) into MEMORY CARD SLOT I of your PlayStation 2 system. You can load saved game data from the same memory card or any MEMORY CARD (8MB) (for PlayStation 2) containing previously saved games. Naming Your Profile
It's time to give your band a name! This new band name will also serve as the name for your Guitar Hero profile. You can edit this name later in the Data Settings in the Options menu.
How to Play Rock
So you're ready to start shredding, huh? It's easy! Guitar Hero's gameplay consists of pressing the fret buttons and strumming on the strum bar up or down in sync to the notes that are scrolling down on screen. There are three primary types of notes you'll find in the game:
Basic Notes
1. Hold the fret button that corresponds to the note on the screen.
2. Strum on the strum bar up or down to play the note.
If you see a string of the same notes, you don't have to release the corresponding fret for each note. You can keep the fret button held down.
Long Notes (Sustains)
1. Hold the fret button down.
2. Strum.
3. Keep the fret button down until the whole note has played.
Chords
These are two notes played at the same time. These can come in the form of basic notes and long notes.
Whammy Bar
The Whammy Bar is an amazing piece of your Guitar Hero SG Controller. You can turn the Whammy Bar to a comfortable position, but to actually use it, you need to press it in towards the guitar. You'll notice that the sound of the note will actually change and bend to reflect how much you're pressing on the Whammy Bar. You can create some really cool sounds with it!
Rock Meter
Keep an eye on your Rock Meter. This handy device lets you know exactly how you're doing. This meter has four settings.
•
GREEN: AWESOME! You're rocking without remorse. You are nailing solos and pumping up the crowd.
•
YELLOW: ROCK ON! This means you're putting in a decent performance. The crowd is digging your performance, but they could be rocking out a lot more.
•
RED: POOR! Watch out for flying bottles and angry concert-goers. This is no way to be a guitar icon.
•
FLASHING RED: DANGER!! You're about to fail the song unless you begin to rock, and rock hard. The band is really close to pulling the plug and putting a 'New Guitarist Wanted' ad in the local paper.
Score Meter
Want to get that unbelievable high score? Then keep tabs on the Score Meter. Every note you play scores you points.
If you can nail a series of notes perfectly, then you'll receive a handy 'Score Multiplier' which is 2-4x the value of each note you hit. Screw up and your Score Multiplier goes away.
Star Power Meter
Star Power is the ultimate way for you to get the crowd roaring and to rack up those high scores! Fill this meter up and you can unleash all the glory of Star Power.
The Star Power Meter needs to be at least half full for Star Power to be available for use.
Star Power
So you want to know what Star Power can do for you? You think you have what it takes? Good! Let's get started.
Star Power is the best way to whip the crowd into a frenzy and a great way to rack up some major points.
Gaining Star Power
There are two ways to gain Star Power:
1. The first way is to nail a series of notes that glow with "energy". If you rip a whole group of them in a row, then you'll grab some potent Star Power energy for your Star Power Meter. Remember, you have to hit every note in the combo to get the boost.
2. The second way is to use the Whammy Bar. When you see long notes glowing with energy, you can use the Whammy Bar to extract the note's energy into your Star Power Meter. You'll notice that the sound of the note will actually 'bend' to reflect how much you're pressing on the Whammy Bar. You need to keep moving the bar to extract the Star Power. You can really create some cool sounds
