Battle Fantasia is an arcade-style fighting game with RPG elements, similar to Guilty Gear . The console versions include various features such as arcade mode, training mode, and versus mode (either offline or online for head-to-head matches). All versions contain the main story mode feature.
The story of Battle Fantasia is set in a fantasy world where darkness and monsters ravaged the lands, nearly destroying it. Four heroes stepped forward to drive back the evil, bringing peace and tranquillity to the world. After the war, the world was divided into two kingdoms: the Magic Kingdom and the Steam Empire. The Deathbringer's return threatens to destroy the world once again.
Players control one of twelve characters, each with their own backstory linking to the devastating war and the reappearance of the Deathbringer. Each character has unique skills and weapons, but unlike traditional fighting games, life bars are determined by hit points and health is deducted based on attack strength.
Battle Fantasia features 2-D cel-shaded graphics on 3-D environments and tells its story through hand-drawn illustrations by Emiko Iwasaki, who also drew the main characters in the game.
