Kratos' journey continues in this final chapter of the God of War trilogy . Right after the events of God of War II, Kratos is betrayed and killed by his father, Zeus, to give up his power. He returns from the Underworld, determined to bring about the death of Zeus by any means necessary. With the help of the Titans, he seeks revenge against the Olympians. Having nothing left to live for, Kratos will stop at nothing to unleash chaos on all of Olympus.
The gameplay in God of War III is similar to its predecessors, offering a mix of hack-and-slashaction, platforming, and puzzle elements. Players control Kratos as he battles against various enemies, using button combinations to execute different moves. Finishing off an enemy requires initiating a Quick-time Event when the proper symbol appears above their heads. Kratos also gains new weapons, including the Cestus and the Blade of Olympus.
The game features a single-player story mode, as well as various extras and modes. Completing the game unlocks the Chaos difficulty and challenges called the Challenge of Olympus. The game also includes videos, such as "The Making of God of War III", and unlockable costumes that grant Kratos special powers in the Treasure section.
