Battlefield 4 is a military first-person shooter set in the near future and directly continues Battlefield 3 . The focus is on its multiplayer mode, where players take on roles such as assault, recon, support, or engineer, each with special abilities and gadgets that can be unlocked over time. In various team-based playing variants like conquest and rush modes, players face each other on big maps with vehicles to use.
The most significant change is the interactive "Levolution" elements, which emphasize destroyable areas and bring a new level of destruction to the game. Battlefield 4 also brings back naval warfare and commander mode, where an additional player can see the map from above, give orders, and assign missile strikes. New modes include Defuse and Obliteration.
The single-player campaign follows a Chinese general who overthrows the government and starts a war with the world, with the USA needing to intervene. The player takes on the role of Recker, commanding a small troop through linear levels with plenty of action and enemies to shoot. There are also stealth and torture sequences, but no co-op mode.
The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions have smaller multiplayer maps due to limited player counts of up to 24.
