Columbus: Ōgon no Yoake is an RPG simulation focused on a fantastical depiction of the life and exploits of the explorer Christopher Columbus . The story of the game is broken up by different eras of Columbus 's life, covering his early life, then exploring around Europe as a young adult, gaining experience levels and taking missions from kings to gain fame, and finally setting sail to find a new route to Asia and ultimately discovering the New World.
Columbus sails around Europe visiting port towns where he can buy equipment and supplies and chat with the locals. Exploring on land or sea however can land Columbus into a battle. While combat is turn-based, its slightly more in depth as players have to take movement into account to get in range of their opponents. Columbus can eventually hire two crewmen to help him in these battles.
The game has both a Normal Mode and the Historical Mode. The only difference is in Historical Mode, time is a factor. The game must be beaten before 1493 starts with time passing counted by every step Columbus makes. There is also a mode where players can practice sailing route missions of various difficulties.
Columbus: Ōgon no Yoake was released on the Famicom in 1992-11-20 and falls under the Action & Adventure genre.
