Donkey Kong , released on the Famicom in 1983, tells the story of Mario's quest to rescue his love interest Pauline from the clutches of Donkey Kong. The damsel in distress is kidnapped and placed in a construction zone, where Mario must navigate through four industrial-themed levels to reach her before time runs out.
Donkey Kong gameplay involves platforming and action elements as Mario dodges barrels, "living" fireballs, and spring-weights. He can also find hammers and other items that grant him temporary powers, such as destroying obstacles or collecting bonus points for Pauline's hat, purse, and umbrella.
The game features a narrative with simplistic cut scenes that advance the story, making it one of the first complete narratives in video game form. Notably, many versions of Donkey Kong were altered to include only two or three original levels, with the cement factory often missing from early conversions.
