The Fantasy Zone is a solar system consisting of eight brightly colored, fantastic planets. The evil Menons are trying to take over all of the planets in the Fantasy Zone by using misappropriated foreign currency to build their forces. It is the player's job to recover all of the coins and save the solar system!
The gameplay involves destroying creatures on each planet and collecting lost coins while navigating through levels. The goal is to locate ten enemy bases, destroy them, and then defeat the boss before moving on to the next world. Along the way, players can find parts shops where they can purchase upgrades for their spaceship.
There are some notable differences between the original arcade version and its ports on different platforms. For example, the Sega Master System and MSX versions lack a base location radar and have six bases per stage instead of ten. In contrast, the NES Sunsoft and Tengen versions have eight or six bases per stage, respectively.
Other notable features include an arrange mode in the Sharp X68000 version where the player must spell "Harrier" to unlock a special level called Dragon Land, which includes battles against all the bosses from Space Harrier. The 3DS version also offers additional game options and features, such as level select screens and coin carryover between games.
The Fantasy Zone also has an unlockable Upa-Upa mode where the player controls Opa-Opa's brother, with the ability to switch weapons on the fly. The game has a unique ending that differs from the original version, and two of the Arcade version bosses are replaced by Sega Master System versions in this version.
