Two hip aliens, Toejam and Earl , from the planet Funkotron were cruising through their galaxy in their spaceship when disaster struck. Earl wasn't paying attention and crashed into an asteroid, which left the ship destroyed and stranded on Earth.
Toejam and Earl 's mission is to travel across the planet, collecting the 10 scattered pieces of their spaceship. However, they'll face numerous challenges from various Earthlings like Nerd Herds, Giant Hamsters, Phantom Ice Cream Trucks, and the Bogeyman.
The power-up items that Toejam and Earl can collect come in wrapped presents, and the contents are unknown until they're opened. The randomized levels and item locations make each game different every time.
The game features a dynamic screen splitting - screen joining 2-player mode, where players start close to each other but can move freely once their screens split vertically. When they reunite, their screens join back together, forming one single screen again.
