Lotus Challenge features 42 cars spanning the company's history, covering Formula One era, Classic era, and modern sports cars. Each virtual Formula One car is based on actual Team Lotus accomplishments, and other models were thoroughly tried by actual Lotus test drivers. A brief corporate history is also provided in the game.
Challenge mode begins with a "Lotus test track" where players must beat best lap time to qualify, then select a character from fictional Lotus Challenge team in story-based contest. The goal is to complete each segment and unlock new content. Three modes are available: "Collection" mode gives access to every car and track; "Championship" mode involves seven different championship classes of cars; and "Single" mode lets players play a quick game.
Lotus Challenge features twenty circuits across various locations, including city streets, speedways, and custom tracks. Circuits range from flat terrain to steep hill climbs, with diversions like special events, stunt sequences, and challenges. Official Lotus test drivers offer advice on undertaking individual courses.
Lotus Challenge provides a variety of options, such as transmission controls, driving aids, and opponent skill, as well as the degree of vehicle damage. In-game visuals provide information on current ranking, laps completed, and remaining time.
Lotus Challenge has multi-player games with access to hidden cars and circuits that can be unlocked by finishing agreed single or championship races.
