MX 2002 is a motocross racing game that features two main modes of play. The first mode is a standard motocross racing experience with options for practice, single races, and seasons. As players progress, they unlock more tracks and bikes to compete on. The second mode is a stunt-based motocross practice/competition mode where riders try to complete as many crazy tricks as possible within a set time limit in a crowded arena.
Players must master the use of the bike's clutch, which can be controlled even with automatic gears, to succeed in the game. The correct use of the clutch allows the rider's speed to remain at its maximum when landing jumps or navigating challenging terrain. This technique must be combined with the "Prime Jump" button, which is held before a jump or bump to enable the rider to fly through the air.
