The story of Saints Row IV begins with the protagonist, now the President of the USA, being kidnapped by aliens and trapped in their personal nightmares. With the help of Kinzie, the group's hacker, the protagonist escapes and flees to a spaceship with the goal of rescuing the rest of the gang.
The game continues this over-the-top action and humour, introducing superpowers that aid the player in movement and combat against alien replacements for law enforcement. These powers make driving less necessary, but can still be used for hijacking cars. Third-person fights and melee/ranged weapons play a significant role.
Saints Row IV features various side activities that can be activated throughout the game world, which are then completed in mini-games to receive ratings of bronze, silver, or gold medals. These mini-games have been modified from previous games, with most being new and designed around the superpowers.
The main storyline involves varied missions, mostly involving movement and combat, as well as sequences parodying other genres like side-scrolling brawlers or top-down shooters. Additionally, there are activities like collecting audio diaries or destroying alien infrastructure points.
Throughout the game, the protagonist visits the alien ship to rescue team members trapped in their nightmares, with the real world only playing a minor role. The simulation can be exited to walk around the ship and talk to the team members. The game parodies the Mass Effect series and its romances.
The player earns rewards, including experience points and cache, for all actions in the game. New super powers are unlocked during the storyline, with upgrades that can be purchased using small glowing balls collected throughout the city. The mobile phone is used to request unlocked cars and homie helpers, among other functions.
Multiplayer involves co-op gameplay during the campaign or competitive activities.
