The game is an action role-playing game, the third main installment in the Witcher series, and a sequel to Assassins of Kings . Gameplay elements such as two sword types for different classes of enemies, magic usage, skill-based character growth, and an extensive alchemy system are carried over from previous games. The combat system has been modified to allow smoother fighting against multiple opponents and the use of long-ranged weapons. Player choice also affects certain story sections, including prominent side quests.
The main difference between this entry and its predecessors is the addition of physical interactivity and open-world elements. Geralt can now engage in activities such as jumping, swimming, riding a horse, and traveling by boat, making nearly every location accessible for exploration. Each area visited is significantly larger than before, with many more optional locations to discover. The game features a night and day cycle, dynamic weather effects, and the ability to craft one's own weapons and armor. In certain segments, Ciri becomes the playable character instead of Geralt.
