Action Bass is an arcade-type fishing game that emphasizes the action of trying to catch a big fish, and the struggle of reeling it in without it getting away. The game features two main modes: Challenge and Free mode.
In the challenge mode, players compete in a tournament where they must catch a fish large enough to meet the weight requirement within three minutes. If their catch is among the top three, they progress to the next fishing area. The player who completes the challenge mode successfully unlocks new lures and areas.
In the free mode, players can choose from four different fishing locations with no time limit or competition. These areas include the boathouse, jungle, waterfall, and sunset spots.
When starting to fish, players must select a lure, such as a minnow, popper, or pencil bait, each with its own characteristics.
Once the line is cast, a meter appears that the player must fill to attract the fish. After catching a fish, another meter appears to measure line tension. The player must carefully reel in the fish without filling this meter, or risk losing it.
Players also get to keep their five largest catches in an aquarium.
