Game Guide
Extracted from the original game manual
This is a dirt track racing simulation game where players drive high-powered sprint cars. The game allows players to experience the speed and excitement of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series, with different skill levels available to help new players master the unique handling of sprint cars on dirt.
Story
Welcome to Pennzoil World of Outlaws
Welcome to "The Greatest Show on Dirt", the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series. The 2002 season marks a quarter century for the World of Outlaws, which has grown into both the most popular and most lucrative form of dirt track motor sport in the United States.
In 2001, the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series featured 65 events over 104 dates at 41 tracks in 25 states and more than $10 million in purses, contingencies, and point fund awards.
Sprint Car Specifications
The success and popularity of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series is due, in part, to the high-speed, lightweight nature of the 410 cubic inch displacement winged sprint car itself, which travels at up to 170 miles per hour - by far the fastest car on dirt.
With 800 horsepower contained within a mere 1200 pounds, the power-to-weight ratio of a World of Outlaws sprint car is comparable to that of a Formula One car.
World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002
World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002 for the PlayStation 2 takes these cars off the track and on to your console. Now you can experience the speed and excitement of the World of Outlaws.
The cars you will drive are unlike any other racing car. You will need every driving skill you can muster to handle a sprint car.
For those of you new to sprint cars and racing on dirt, World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002 has three different skills levels to aid in building your driving ability.

How to Drive a Sprint Car
Racing on a dirt track is different from racing on a paved surface. Sprint cars tend to spin out in corners, and your goal is to control this spin and slide to maintain speed.
Control your car by turning into the slide and easing off the gas or applying the brake. Once you control the slide, slowly reapply the gas to maintain speed, then floor it on the straightaway.
Start in Easy mode and gradually work your way up to Outlaws difficulty. Practice is key to mastering sprint car racing.
Wing Movement
The vehicles in World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002 have large top wings that can be moved and tilted to alter aerodynamic properties. This is simulated using "wing adjustment" controls.
Moving the wing back increases its angle, providing more downward force and pushing the car towards the ground. This improves handling but slows the car down. Moving the wing forward has the opposite effect.
Due to wind resistance, moving the wing forward at race speed can be more difficult than moving it backward. If your car setup isn't quite right, try adjusting the wing to change the handling; it could significantly impact your race.

When racing on a dirt track in an open-cockpit vehicle, mud will get on your visor. World of Outlaws™ drivers use clear plastic strips called tear-offs on their helmet visors, which can be removed one at a time to clear their view.
In World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002, this is simulated by the "tear-off" control. Each press of the "tear-off" button removes the outermost strip, temporarily clearing your view.
It's important to use tear-offs carefully. If you run out before the race ends, you won't be able to clear your vision, making it difficult to see the finish line or other cars.
Gears
There is no gear shifting in World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002. The cars use an in/out direct drive with a quick-change rear end.
You must set the drive ratio (effectively the "gear") of the car before entering the track. Refer to the Car Tuning section for more information on adjusting your car's drive ratio.
Quick Start Guide
To quickly get into the action, jump into a Single Race as one of the Pennzoil® World of Outlaws™ drivers.
After the introduction, select Arcade Mode from the Main Menu, then Single Race from the Mode Select Screen. Choose your difficulty level, which affects opponent ability and your car's handling. Start with Easy, or Medium if you're experienced. Outlaw difficulty is best saved for later.
Next, choose your favorite World of Outlaws™ driver and press the button to select. Then, select your desired track and event length. To go straight to the race, press the button on both screens; the default choices are fine.
On the track selection screen, you can choose Race Length (number of laps) and Race Format. Race Format determines if you want a qualifying stage followed by the A Main race, or a full event with practice, qualifying, heat races, and main races.
If you selected Brief, choose the Time of Day. The six settings represent stages of an event, with 1 being qualifying and 6 being the final A Main. This also affects track conditions and time of day, from tacky and early (1) to dry and under lights (6). The brief format covers two stages of the six-stage event.
After making your race selections, you'll go to the Race Format Screen. Here, you can Race the current stage, tune your car, Skip the current race, or Retire from the event. Good luck!

Tips & Maps
Sponsor Offers
Sponsor offers depend on race type and success; better races attract better sponsors, but winning smaller races is more impressive than losing big ones.
Choosing a Sponsor
Consider sponsor offers carefully, as you cannot change sponsors until your accepted contract expires.
Long-Term Sponsorships
Long-term sponsorships can provide financial security in case of car damage, balancing potential short-term earnings against insurance against disaster.
RR Spacing
RR spacing is the distance the right rear wheel is spaced from the chassis, typically 9" but adjustable in 1/4" increments based on track conditions.
Ride Height
Ride height is adjusted for front and rear axles individually, with higher settings for slick tracks to transfer weight to the right rear, and lower settings for tacky or rough tracks to maintain balance.
Shock Type
Sprint cars use compressed gas shocks with adjustable compression and rebound rates, with basic types including easy-up, standard, and tie-down.
Quick Change
The quick change, located on the differential, houses two gears that determine the drive ratio, which can be adjusted quickly between 4.97 and 6.04 depending on track length.
Weight Jacking
Weight can be balanced by pre-loading torsion bars, moving weight to the left and front for slick tracks, or keeping it over the right rear for tacky tracks.
Saving and Loading Car Setups
Car setups are saved per time of day at each track in Career Mode and are specific to individual race stages, not entire tracks.
Racing Lines
On dirt tracks, finding the right racing line with grip, either on the bottom near the berm or on the cushion, is crucial for speed.
The Cushion
The cushion is moist dirt that builds up on the outside of the track, offering good grip but requiring careful driving to avoid going too wide.
Vehicle Tuning
Proper vehicle tuning is essential for competitiveness, allowing drivers to maximize their skills and achieve fast laps.
Loose Car (Over-steer)
A loose car, or over-steer, occurs when the rear end slides out, indicating a lack of rear tire grip and slower straightaway entry.
Tight Car (Under-steer)
A tight car, or under-steer, happens when the front doesn't turn into the corner, requiring slower speeds to navigate turns.
Wing Movement
Adjusting the wing's position and angle in the cockpit during a race significantly impacts car handling.
Adjusting Wing for Loose Car
If the car is loose, slide the wing back to create a steeper angle, generating more downforce to improve rear wheel grip.
Adjusting Wing for Tight Car
If the car is tight, slide the wing forward to lessen downforce, which will loosen the rear end and allow for easier, faster cornering.
Dynamic Wing Adjustment
Adjusting the wing to suit changing dirt racetrack conditions can significantly improve your chances of winning races.
