Battlefield 3 is the direct sequel to Battlefield 2 and is the 11th overall entry in the Battlefield franchise. Powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, Battlefield 3 aims to provide fast-paced, team-oriented online multiplayer while also providing a single-player campaign and cooperative mode for the first time in any Battlefield game. The game introduces the Battlelog feature, which provides in-depth statistics for individual soldiers and allows players to create Platoons.
The campaign is set in 2014, where players take on the role of Staff Sergeant Henry Blackburn and his squad as they are interrogated about knowledge of an attack on New York. The missions take place in a disjointed, flashback fashion as Blackburn recounts his encounter with the PLR - a dangerous terrorist organization who may be after chemical and nuclear weapons.
The multiplayer suite contains Conquest, Rush, Team Deathmatch, and Squad-based variations of these modes. There are multiple classes, including Assault, Support, Engineer, and Recon, each with their own unique abilities and gadgets. Classes can unlock new specializations and items based on usage and performance. The game also features a variety of vehicles, such as tanks, jets, and helicopters.
Console editions of the game support smaller maps and lower player counts, with only 24 players able to meet online in Console iterations. The PC version requires Windows Vista or Windows 7 and a DirectX 10 or 11 card to run.
