Battlefield 3 is the direct sequel to 2005's Battlefield 2 and is the 11th overall entry in the Battlefield franchise. Powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, Battlefield 3 aims to provide the fast-paced team-oriented online multiplayer the series has made its name upon while also providing a cooperative mode for the first time. The game also introduces the Battlelog feature, an in-browser service which provides in-depth statistics for individual soldiers and their combined group stats.
The campaign is set in 2014, where players take on the role of Staff Sergeant Henry Blackburn and his 5-man squad. The story follows Blackburn's interrogation about knowledge of an attack on New York, with missions taking place in a disjointed flashback fashion as he recounts his encounter with the PLR - a dangerous terrorist organization who may be after chemical and nuclear weapons.
The multiplayer suite contains Conquest, Rush, Team Deathmatch, and Squad-based variations. The Assault class uses assault rifles and carries medic kits to heal teammates, while the Support class uses light machine guns to resupply teammates. Each class can unlock new gadgets and specializations, with a weapon-specific unlock tree for each weapon. Vehicles consist of tanks, IFVs, armored personnel carriers, hummers, jeeps, helicopters, and jets.
Console editions support lower player counts and smaller maps, with only 24 players able to meet online in Console iterations. The PC version requires Windows Vista or Windows 7, as it cannot run without a DirectX 10 or 11 card.
