Brink is a multiplayer shooter set in a future where almost the whole earth is flooded by water. The Ark is one of the last inhabitable places left, but there's a conflict between the security guards and the resistance. They're now at war, trying to gain the upper hand. The game features two single-player campaigns, but they're similar to multiplayer with bots and cutscenes.
Every map has several areas with their own goals. Security and resistance have opposing objectives, so one area might require security to blast a gate while the resistance tries to foil their plan. Players can choose from four classes: soldier (brute force), medic (healing), engineer (gadgets), and agent (hacking). There are four basic mission types: escorting, destroying, defending, and using a device. Class-specific goals add complexity. The game uses an automatic mission system, where players receive missions based on their actions.
The focus of the game is on teamwork, with many ways for classes to help each other out. Players can switch classes from in-game terminals if needed. When creating a new character, there are options to individualize, but these only affect appearance. The exception is body measurements, which determine class abilities: big guys use heavy guns, while light characters are faster and have access to the "SMART" system.
