The player takes on the role of Eddie Hawkins, known as "Hudson Hawk," a world-renowned cat burglar in this platformer based on the 1991 comedy/action film of the same name. After ten years in prison for a robbery gone wrong, Eddie is released with the intention of going straight and retiring.
However, fate has other plans. Years ago, Leonardo Da Vinci created a machine that was meant to convert lead into bronze, but it instead converted lead to gold. The crystal that powered the machine was broken into three pieces and hidden in three of Da Vinci's works: a miniature sculpture of a horse called the Sforza, his sketchbook and notebook called the Codex, and a miniature model of his helicopter design.
Ultra-rich psychotic yuppies Darwin and Minerva Mayflower have found out about the machine and own one piece of the crystal. They plan to flood the market with gold and crush the global economy, and they need Eddie's services to get their hands on the remaining crystal pieces. With no choice, Eddie must do jobs, save his friend Tommy "Five-Tone" Messina from danger, and put an end to the Mayflowers' plot.
The game follows Eddie as he navigates through various locations, including Rutherford's Auction House in New York, the Vatican, and Castle Da Vinci in Italy. He must dodge an assortment of enemies, such as security guards, guard dogs, janitors, crazed nuns, balloon-riding henchmen, paparazzi, and kids on bikes.
Eddie's sole tool of the trade is a baseball, which he uses to subdue enemies, distract guard dogs, and trigger switches. He can also crawl to avoid shots and security beams, and use ropes and pipes to shimmy across to avoid traps. Boxes are used to push and stack to reach out-of-reach areas.
Hudson Hawk is a platformer released for the GameBoy in 1991, where players take on the role of Eddie Hawkins as he navigates through various challenges and enemies to save his friend and foil the plot of the wealthy and psychotic Mayflower twins.
