Yakuza 4 takes place in 2010, following four men with their own storylines that are connected to a plot 25 years in the making. The truth behind a tragic event in 1985 has been hidden, but as the events near fruition, the truth begins to unravel.
The gameplay is where Yakuza 4 truly shines, introducing three new characters: Shun Akiyama, Taiga Saejima, and Masayoshi Tanimura. Each character has their own combat style, with Akiyama using taunting moves, Saejima leveraging his strength to lift heavy objects, and Tanimura countering attacks while blocking and chaining combos into HEAT actions.
The game's world, set in the fictional Tokyo district of Kamurocho, has been expanded with new areas to explore, including rooftops, an underground mall and parking garage, and a sewer system. As in previous Yakuza games, side stories and mini-games can be found by wandering the streets and entering businesses. The game also features hostess clubs and a massage parlor, returning from the western release of Yakuza 3 , while some content has been cut from the western release.
