The Sony Playstation is home to the fourth title in the Ridge Racer series, featuring new visuals powered by goraud-shaded polygons, giving each car and track a more refined appearance. This keeps the same arcade gameplay popularized by the first game of the series.
The focus of the game is on the Real Racing Roots '99 , Ridge City's three heat, seven race championship, with the grand finale in a speedway during New Year's Eve. The player must choose one of four teams available: Micro Mouse Mappy , Pac Racing Team , Racing Team Solvalou , and Dig Racing Team .
The player can then choose from four car makers available: Lizard and Assoluto offer traditional cars drifting wildly on corners, while Age Solo and Terrazi introduce "Grip" cars that require more breaking and careful trajectories. The player earns and unlocks cars by completing races.
Final placement in races defines how good the car will be, with sponsors unwilling to invest if the driver doesn't win. By scraping through heats, the player can earn rewards, but winning all races allows them to reach the Shooting Hoops speedway with the fastest car.
R4 Ridge Racer Type 4 includes an extra disk featuring the original game in higher resolution. The game was also sold as a bundle along Namco's innovative Jogcon controller.
