The fourth title in the Ridge Racer series is a racing game developed exclusively for the PSP console. The game features new visuals, powered by goraud-shaded polygons, giving each car and track a more refined appearance, while keeping the same arcade gameplay popularized by the first game of the series.
The focus of the game is on the Real Racing Roots '99 , Ridge City's three heat, seven race championship, with the grand finale in a speedway during New Year's Eve. The player starts by choosing one of the four teams available: Micro Mouse Mappy , Pac Racing Team , Racing Team Solvalou , and Dig Racing Team . Each team has its own story and struggles, with the French team trying to win their first title in many years, the Japanese team aiming to make an immediate splash in the Ridge City racing scene, and the American team struggling to provide a car capable of out-handling opponents.
The player can choose from four car makers: Lizard and Assoluto offer traditional cars that drift wildly on corners, while Age Solo and Terrazi offer new "Grip" cars that require more breaking and careful trajectories. The player earns and unlocks cars by completing races, with final placement defining how good the car will be.
The game also features a split-screen versus mode and time attack, but the main focus is on the championship mode. By scraping through the first two heats, sponsors may not invest in the team, but winning all races allows the driver to reach the Shooting Hoops speedway with the fastest car. With 320 cars to unlock, players can enjoy a wide range of racing experiences.
Ridge Racer Type 4 also includes an extra disk featuring the original Ridge Racer in higher resolution. The game was sold as a bundle along Namco's innovative Jogcon controller at some point, adding to its unique features and replay value.
